Le Mans : Lowe’s Fernandez Racing lines up fourth at Road America E-mail
Sunday, 16 August 2009 02:30
ImageLowe’s Fernandez Racing will start second in class and fourth overall in Sunday’s Time Warner Cable Road Race Showcase featuring the American Le Mans Series at Road America.

Adrian Fernandez, who handled qualifying duties this afternoon in the #15 Lowe’s Acura, dug deep to close the gap to the LMP2 pole winning time to just over two tenths of a second.

Marino Franchitti, aboard the #20 Dyson Mazda, claimed the first class position pole of the season for the Dyson squad.

Fernandez and team-mate Luis Diaz started in the exact same spot on the grid last year at Road America and will be looking for better fortune in Sunday’s 2 hour 45 minute race. The pair were knocked out of podium contention last season by a left rear suspension failure 30 minutes from the end of the race.

Fernandez and Diaz currently hold a 51 point lead in the P2 championship standings.

Adrian Fernandez:
“The car has been good all weekend, and I think we have a good car for the race. Marino [Franchitti] put in a good lap and they beat us for the first time this year. My congratulations to them. Our car has been very consistent which will be good for the race. A lot of things can happen in two hours and 45 minutes, but we are looking good.”

Luis Diaz:
“In general, it was a good day. We know we have a good race car for tomorrow. Adrian did a great job in qualifying and was pushing very hard. We know our limitations, especially in these types of circuits with the long straights, but the team did a great job. We haven’t had any problems and, hopefully, we will have a clean race tomorrow. We have to keep finishing races and to try to fight as much as we can, and I think we have a good shot tomorrow if we can stay out of trouble.”

Qualifying results - Overall:

1. de Ferran/Pagenaud – LMP1 Acura ARX 02a | 1:48.216 = 134.664 mph
2. Brabham/Sharp – LMP1 Acura ARX 02a | 1:49.039 = 133.648 mph
3. Leitzinger/Franchitti – LMP2 Lola B09 86 Mazda | 1:51.010 = 131.275 mph
