Thus, all three Signature entered Dallara-Volkswagen made it into the top four as Mortara, Bottas and Vanthoor battled it out for the top positions from the very beginning.

Only in the second half of the session did Marco Wittmann managed to join them in the fight.

Qualifying had to be stopped twice. The reason for the first red flag was Mika Mäki (Motopark Academy, 1:33.325 minutes), who had come off the track.

With 18 seconds remaining, Alexander Sims (ART Grand Prix, 1:31.836 minutes), hit a tyre wall which brought out the red flags for the second time. After that, the session wasn’t resumed.

Edoardo Mortara (Signature):
“After the pre-event test, I was still very much impressed by the lap time that Valtteri had done. However, for me, things went really well in qualifying. Tomorrow, a good start will be crucial, which I didn’t always manage in the past races. I want to win here and show that I could have won at the Masters, too.”

Marco Wittmann (Signature):
“Second place is not bad considering that we were still having some problems during the test. Before the second stint, we have made a few changes that went into the right direction. Now, we have to find the remaining two tenths of a second overnight, the margin that Edoardo had over me.”

Valtteri Bottas (ART Grand Prix):
“My lap felt good and I feel that I couldn’t have been much faster. A few hundredths of a second less would probably have been all, but not the two tenths that Edoardo had as a margin. After my fastest time in the pre-event test, my goal was to claim my maiden pole position here.”
