Italian Edoardo Mortara made history in Macau on Sunday, by becoming the only racing driver to win the Formula 3 Grand Prix for a second time.
The reigning Formula 3 Euro Series champion Edoardo Mortara (Signature) crowned his successful 2010 season by writing motorsport history at the 6.12 kilometres long Guia circuit when the Italian became the first driver to win the Macau Grand Prix, the unofficial Formula 3 World Finale, twice.
He was followed home by Laurens Vanthoor (Signature), Valtteri Bottas (Prema Powerteam) and Marco Wittmann (Signature).
Six of the eight best placed drivers in the Macau Grand Prix raced in this year’s Formula 3 Euro Series.
At the start of the race, Mortara claimed the lead from pole position, after the first Safety Car intervention which was caused by a start line crash, Daniel Abt (Signature) and Laurens Vanthoor overtook Mortara.
The latter used the restart after another safety car intervention due to an accident of Daniel Abt to claim back the lead of the race.
Eventually, 23 year old Mortara scored a safe win from Vanthoor, Bottas and Witmann while a fifth place for Renger van der Zande (Motopark Academy) was a good result for his team in its first participation in the Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix.
Edoardo Mortara (Signature): “Having made history with my second victory in Macau is a great honour for me. It wasn’t easy, because especially Laurens, Valtteri and Daniel were tough opponents. I had to give 120 percent and drive like in qualifying to pull a gap in order to prevent the drivers behind me from getting a slipstream.”
Laurens Vanthoor (Signature): “The second safety car intervention didn’t help me, because Edoardo was able to overtake me out of the slipstream. However, I am happy with second place, Edoardo was just too fast today. He has deserved to be in the history books now.”
Valtteri Bottas (Prema Powerteam): “I am especially happy for my team Prema and for Mercedes with this third place. My problem is that Marco Wittmann overtook me at the second restart. When I had finally been able to get my position back, Edoardo and Laurens were already too far away.”
(Report by Adam Hay-Nicholls) Edoardo Mortara has won the prestigious Macau Grand Prix, the world cup of Formula 3, for the second consecutive year.
Former Macau winners include Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna, but this is the first time in the Formula 3 Grand Prix’s 28 year history that a driver has won it twice.
Mortara has done it back to back, earning himself the nickname Mr. Macau.
The 23 year old made a strong start from pole position and managed to keep all his pursuers at bay, however, a start line crash prompted two laps of the Safety Car and at the restart the Cicuito da Guai’s long straight allowed both Daniel Abt and Laurens Vanthoor to get a tow.
They passed their Signature team-mate before Lisboa, demoting Mortara to third. Rookie Abt led but crashed heavily seconds later at Paiol, summoning the Safety Car for a second time.
When it came in, Edo took advantage and slipstreamed Vanthoor to re-seize the lead. From there, he accelerated all the way to the chequered flag.
EDOARDO MORTARA: “It feels superb to win again and it’s a great honour for me to be a small part of motorsport history. Every year the competition at this race is really tough. Today was a big challenge. Laurens [Vanthoor] and Valtteri [Bottas] were pushing me really hard."
"I’ve got quite a lot of experience here and know that if you haven’t got a big gap to the car behind as you exit the last corner, they will overtake you. I thought I had enough when the first Safety Car came in, but unfortunately that was not the case and they Laurens and Daniel [Abt] passed me right at the end of the straight. Daniel then crashed and he wasn’t moving as we came past the wreck behind the Safety Car, so I really hope he’s okay."
"At the second restart I got close enough to Laurens on the straight to pass him, and from there I pushed like hell. More than in qualifying. I gave it everything, every corner I was close to touching the wall. I risked it all to create a gap."
"The best part was seeing my guys cheering from the pit wall as I took the chequered flag. I love my Signature boys. Huge thanks to them and to Volkswagen for giving me a fantastic car and fantastic support. This is a sensational end to the perfect year for us.”
