Formula 3 Euro Series - Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam, 1'51.511) set the fastest time in first qualifying of the new season in the Formula 3 Euro Series at the 5.791 kilometres long Circuit Paul Ricard at Le Castellet in the south of France, 0.716 seconds faster than Marco Wittmann (Signature, 1'52.227).

Wittmann’s team-mate Laurens Vanthoor (Signature, 1'52.354) and Merhi’s team-mate Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam, 1'52.366) ended up third and fourth respectively. Roberto Merhi also came out on top in the ranking of the second fastest lap times.

With two fastest day times, Roberto Merhi and his team already showed a good performance at the official tests in mid-March.

They seamlessly continued during the first race meeting of the season. By ending up fourth, Daniel Juncadella also proved that Merhi’s Prema Powerteam already knows very well how to handle the new Kumho slick tyres at the start of the season.

Tghe Signature team has also done its homework during the winter, the defending team champions ended up second and third with Marco Wittmann and Laurens Vanthoor.

Nigel Melker (Mücke Motorsport, 1'52.440) was the best placed rookie in the field.

As Roberto Merhi also came out on top in the ranking of the second fastest lap times, the Spaniard not only claimed pole position for the third race (Sunday), but is also allowed to start the first race (Saturday) of the weekend from first place on the grid.

Laurens Vanthoor will be lining up alongside him for the first race of the year. Fastest rookie Nigel Melker was third from Daniel Juncadella and Marco Wittmann.

Temperature track: 21.1°C
Temperature air: 18.2 °C

Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam):
“In testing this morning, we were already really good and in qualifying, everything went fine as well. The car was good, the engine was good, the tyres were good: everything was all right. My goal for this weekend is winning as many races as possible.”

Marco Wittmann (Signature):
“On Sunday, I am second on the grid, which makes me particularly happy because we are still having some slight problems with the new tyres. Neither Laurens nor I could match Roberto’s time. Nevertheless, I am happy that the season finally gets underway again.”
