F3 : 2011 Le Castellet - Rookie Melker takes first Formula 3 Euro Series win E-mail

Formula 3 Euro Series - Nigel Melker (Mucke Motorsport) has won the season opener of the 2011 championship with Swedish driver Felix Rosenqvist (Mucke Motorsport) completing the success for German team by finishing second, 4.09 seconds behind his team-mate.

Third place went to Spaniard Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam), thus drivers with a Mercedes-Benz engine locked out the podium.

The new for 2011 Kumho slick tyres lived up to the expectations of the developers in the first race of the Formula 3 Euro Series already and meant a new challenge for the teams.

Mucke Motorsport and Prema Powerteam turned out to be the teams who made the best of this task during the season opener.

Mucke driver Nigel Melker didn’t have an excellent start, but within a few laps, the Dutchman made his way to the front of the field.

Once in the lead, the 20 year old was able to pull away. His team-mate Felix Rosenqvist showed an equally strong performance, overtaking pole sitter Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam) halfway through the race in the battle for second place.

With four laps remaining, Merhi was also overtaken by his team-mate Daniel Juncadella and eventually crossed the finish line in fourth place ahead of Marco Wittmann (Signature).

Due to a technical problem, last year’s runner up started from the pit lane and still made it home fifth after a strong performance.

Temperature track: 18.1°C
Temperature air: 17.4 °C

Nigel Melker (Mucke Motorsport):
“This is my first victory with a single seater race car and I am really happy. In testing, we focussed more on the set-up for the race than on the qualifying performance and that has paid off. During the race, the new tyres didn’t cause any problems for me.”

Felix Rosenqvist (Mucke Motorsport):
“My start was good, although I had a few doubts after the test sessions. I moved up to finish second from sixth on the grid, so I can be very happy with that. However, there was no way for me to jeopardize Nigel’s first place.”
