F2 : Germans Julian & Johannes Theobald set for Formula 2 2011 season assault E-mail

German brothers Julian and Johannes Theobald will both race in the FIA Formula Two Championship in 2011, having competed in selected rounds last year, they become the 18th and 19th drivers to be announced ahead of the opening round at Silverstone this weekend.

26-year-old Julian Theobald joined F2 for the first time at the second official mid-season test at Brands Hatch in July 2010, before staying in the series to contest the next three rounds at Brands Hatch, Brno and Oschersleben, where he was joined by younger brother Johannes.

Julian quickly got to grips with the Williams F2 car and he achieved a best finish of 13th at Brno.

Prior to F2, Julian won the Trophy Class in the 2006 F3 Euro Series championship, and competed in two part-seasons of Formula Renault 3.5.

Johannes Theobald, 24, quickly established himself in F2 last year by challenging for top ten honours in both outings at the end of the season, Oschersleben in Germany and the final round at Valencia.

Johannes' spell in F2 was all the more impressive given he opted to move away from motorsport for a two-year break as he completed his academic studies, and like Julian, he has previously raced in Formula Renault 3.5, and he finished as runner up in the both the Trophy Class of the German F3 Championship in 2006 and also the Formula Konig series in 2004.

Julian Theobald
“I’m happy to return to F2 as I’m very satisfied with the car, the series and the organisation, so it’s good to come back. It was my first choice and the cost effectiveness is a major factor. I’m really looking forward to Silverstone, it’s a nice track and for this race and the rest of the season I’m aiming to finish in the top ten and score points.”

Johannes Theobald
“I really liked the races I did last year, it was a really good experience. It’s a good car to drive, lots of power and nowhere else can you drive at such a high level for this cost. There’s lots of great competition and it’s completely fair - plus the data sharing service is invaluable. I’m really happy and after coming close in the races I did last year I hope to be in the points regularly.”

Jonathan Palmer - Formula Two Series Director
“I’m very pleased to welcome Julian and Johannes back to F2. Both drivers acquitted themselves well last season and I have no doubt that, given the opportunity of a full campaign, they will score their first points this year.”
