Six time Talladega winner Jeff Gordon won his 70th career pole Saturday after he toured the 2.66 mile track in 53.723 seconds (178.248 mph),and led a power of Hendrick Motorsports car to a sweep of the top four spots at Talladega Superspeedway for Sunday's Aaron's 499 Sprint Cup race, the eighth event of the season, only the third team in NASCAR history to monopolize the first two rows for a Cup race.

The Coors Light pole award was Gordon's first of the season, second at Talladega and the 70th of his career, breaking a tie for third all time with Cale Yarborough, Jimmie Johnson (177.844mph) qualified second, followed by team-mates Mark Martin (177.807mph) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (177.765mph).

Only twice before in Cup racing has an organization swept the top four starting spots for a race. Owner Pete DePaolo's cars started 1-5 at Concord, Charlotte, N.C., in 1956, cars owned by Jack Roush claimed the top four spots on the grid at Fontana, California in 2005.
