Formula 3 Euro Series - In Formula 3 Euro Series’ qualifying at the 4.574 kilometres long Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg Marco Wittmann (Signature, 1'33.152) set the fastest lap time and secured pole position for the Sunday race of the Hockenheim weekend.
Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam, 1'33.249) was 0.097 seconds slower and ended up second behind Wittmann.
In the ranking of the second fastest lap times, the Spaniard came out on top, which puts him on pole position for the first race of the weekend.
Points’ leader Daniuel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam, 1'33.490) and Laurens Vanthoor (Signature, 1'33.538) ended up third and fourth in qualifying.
Marco Wittmann made history with his fastest lap time as he was the first to set a fastest time in a qualifying session for the FIA Formula 3 International Trophy that was established in winter.
The Signature driver moved up into first place with six minutes remaining in qualifying and thus repeated his success from last year when he was also first in qualifying at the same venue for the second meeting of the season.
In the final minutes, Wittmann’s lap time remained unbeaten as the session was interrupted after Nigel Melker (Mücke Motorsport, 1'33.751) had crashed into the barriers.
In the remaining four minutes after the session resumed, the order remained unchanged. Melker remained seventh as the best placed rookie, directly behind his team-mate Felix Rosenqvist (Mücke Motorsport, 1'33.583) and Daniel Abt (Signature, 1'33.684) in fifth and sixth place respectively.
Marco Wittmann (Signature): “In qualifying, we tried a different set-up than we had in testing this morning, which helped us. In testing before Hockenheim, we have made good progress. Now, we have to wait for the races in order to see how the tyres behave with this set-up during the race distance.”
Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam): “In testing, my car wasn’t good at all, but we have successfully developed it into the right direction. In qualifying, it was nearly perfect and the balance was all right."
