Formula 3 Euro Series - Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam) won the first of three Formula 3 Euro Series races at the 4.574 kilometre long Hockenheimring Baden-Wurttemberg becoming the first winner of the new FIA Formula 3 International Trophy, with Marco Wittmann (Signature) in second and Laurens Vanthoor (Signature) completing the podium.
With his second victory of the season, Merhi moved up into the points’ lead of the Formula 3 Euro Series.
Starting from pole, Roberto Merhi took the lead while behind him, Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam) slotted into second at the start.
Juncadella, starting the race as the series points leader, made a mistake on the opening lap and watched Marco Wittmann, Felix Rosenqvist (Mücke Motorsport), Laurens Vanthoor and Daniel Abt (Signature) overtake him.
The closing stages of the race saw a thrilling battle for victory between Merhi and Wittmann which ended in Spaniard's favour, Daniel Abt finished fourth behind Vanthoor.
Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam): “My start was really bad, but on the first lap, I benefited from the fact that the drivers behind me were fighting. In the closing stages, I had a nice fight with Marco Wittmann. Unfortunately, I lost a rear-view mirror in the race, so that I sometimes didn’t know where Marco was. I am very happy with this victory, especially as I am now also leading the points’ standings and I have made history with the first win in the new FIA Formula 3 International Trophy.”
Marco Wittmann (Signature): “In the past few weeks, we have made really good progress after the season opener didn’t go as planned for us. Having moved up from fifth to second within only one lap, I was even surprised myself. In the last eight laps, I had a close and fair battle with Roberto.”
Laurens Vanthoor (Signature): “After the season opener, we have tested, which brought us quite a lot. In testing, we have both improved the set-up of the car and my driving style. In today’s race, I probably was a little bit too cautious at the beginning, but all in all, I am quite happy with the way things are going for us.”
