Formula 3 Euro Series - At the 4.574 kilometre long Hockenheimring Baden-Wurttemberg, the Spaniard Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam) decided the second of three Formula 3 Euro Series races in his favour when he crossed the finish line 2.705 seconds ahead of his compatriot Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam), the winner of the first race with Carlos Munoz (Signature) finishing third.
* NB: Race results revised based on a 2.4 second penalty for Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam) due to overtaking outside the track limits, which is an infringement of the regulations.
Roberto Merhi remains in the lead of the points’ standings, he is nine points ahead of his rival Daniel Juncadella.
At the start, Daniel Juncadella slotted in behind Carlos Munoz and immediately put pressure on the Colombian, the latter, however, was able to retain his position until the fifth lap when Juncadella overtook him and one lap later, Roberto Merhi also overtook the Signature driver.
Slight rain set in during the closing stages of the race, but there were no changes at the front of the field.
For Daniel Juncadella, it was the second victory of the season with his Prema Powerteam having already clinched the fourth win from five races.
For Nigel Melker (Mucke Motorsport), chances of a good result were rather limited after the formation lap got underway when the Dutchman stalled the engine of his Dallara-Mercedes and had to start from last place on the grid, but was still classified as the best rookie in eleventh place.
Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam): “Surely, I was lucky that Nigel Melker had to start from the back of the grid. Thus, there was one car less between Carlos and me. As Roberto came closer and closer, I wanted to overtake Carlos. I think I surprised him with my overtaking manoeuvre. At the end, I was just hoping that the rain wouldn’t get worse.”
Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam): “Moving up from eighth place on the grid to second at the finish surely isn’t too bad. There was no way for me to jeopardize Daniel’s victory, he already was too far ahead.”
Carlos Munoz (Signature): “After qualifying and the first race, with which I wasn’t happy either, I am now relieved by finishing third. I certainly have made progress. Dani and Roberto surprised me with their attacks and that is why I wasn’t able to successfully defend my first place.”
