Formula 3 Euro Series - Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam) claimed victory in the eleventh round of the Formula 3 Euro Series this season at the 4.326 kilometre long Red Bull Ring.
The Spaniard scored his second victory, having already won the first race of the weekend in the morning, in an action packed race on a wet track, Laurens Vanthoor (Signature) finished second with Daniel Abt (Signature) climbing on the podium after coming home third.
Merhi remains points leader in the Formula 3 Euro Series.
Due to the rain, the race was started behind the Safety Car, Gianmarco Raimondo (Prema Powerteam) led until the seventh lap, was then overtaken by Roberto Merhi, and as the Canadian briefly came off the track in the manoeuvre, Laurens Vanthoor also overtook him.
One lap later, Raimondo collided with Tom Dillmann (Motopark), which promoted Daniel Abt to third, Raimondo dropped back to seventh behind Kimiya Sato (Motopark) Jimmy Eriksson (Motopark) and Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam).
Out in front, Roberto Merhi drove a safe victory home and when the chequered flag came out his margin over rival Laurens Vanthoor was 8.818 seconds.
Temperature track: 16.3°C Temperature air: 14.6°C
Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam): “Everything is perfect. I have won this morning and now again having started eighth. That is the way I like it. This afternoon, it was even better, because I have won with a margin of more than eight seconds, although I had to slow down on the last two laps due to yellow flags. I like driving in such conditions.”
Laurens Vanthoor (Signature): “Seeing anything in these conditions was difficult. Sometimes, I even had water in my helmet. I am happy with second place, because Roberto was just too quick. He was in a league of his own.”
Daniel Abt (Signature): “It was a crazy race, one could hardly see a thing. In the first few laps, I probably was a little bit too cautious, but I definitely didn’t want to make a mistake. It is great that I finally have made it onto the podium now and that it is going better and better. Nevertheless, there is still potential for development and we have to continue working.”
