MotoGP results of the qualifying session at the circuit in Assen - San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli starts from pole position for the 2011 Dutch TT after beating American Ben Spies and Australian Casey Stoner to the top spot of the grid.

The Italian racer Simoncelli left no doubt what his intentions are for the race tomorrow in his show of determination to secure his first premier class win by securing his second pole position of the 2011 MotoGP season.

With his long hair trailing out from under his helmet, 'Super Sic' posted a hot lap of 1’34.718 which placed him nine thousandths of a second clear at the top of the timesheet, ahead of Yamaha Factory Racing’s Ben Spies.

The Texan stepped up his pace for the weekend to head the leaderboard at the halfway point of the hour long session and was the first to break into the 1’34's.

Australian Stoner recorded a time of 1’35.008 on his Repsol Honda to complete the front row for the Iveco TT Assen race.

The reigning MotoGP world champion, Jorge Lorenzo, once again set the fourth fastest time of the day when he circulated in 1’35.143, followed by the Italian Andrea Dovizioso who was 0.101 behind the Spaniard.

Rookie Cal Crutchlow on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team machine, still coping with the broken collarbone he sustained at Silverstone two weeks ago, bravely rode to fifth on the grid, 0.085 behind the Repsol Honda of Dovizioso.

Karel Abraham riding the Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati, having just secured a deal to race with the marque next year, had a confident outing and even placing as high as third in the session to finally place his Ducati in seventh on the grid with a time of 1’35.742.

Texan Colin Edwards on the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha trailed the Czech rider by a slim margin of 0.076 with the Ducati's of Nicky Hayden and and Randy de Puniet completing the ten fastest times.

In several attempts to find a good dry set-up for the Ducati GP11.1, Valentino Rossi did not make any significant improvements and will be starting the race from eleventh position.

Substituting for Dani Pedrosa in the Repsol Honda team, Hiroshi Aoyama will start from twelfth position while a disappointing afternoon was had by both Loris Capirossi on the Pramac Racing Ducati and the reigning Moto2 champion Toni Elias on the LCR Honda, after both crashed out of the qualifying session.
