Formula One times from the practice session at the Monte Carlo circuit - With nine minutes remaining the FP1 session was red flagged after the Renault engine in the Caterham of Heikki Kovalainen gave up the ghost in a major blow-out with a serious cloud of smoke in the tunnel and depositing oil on the racing line reducing visibility on the sector of the circuit, but it was the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso that posted the top time 1'16.265 after the session was not restarted due to the tight schedule of events for the day.

Romain Grosjean was 0.365 behind the Spaniard sporting a gold helmet in the red prancing horse, while the second Lotus E20 of Kimi Raikkonen did not set a time and spent the morning in the garage as the team worked on a steering issue for the Finn.

The Sauber of Sergio Perez circulated in the third fastest time with Lewis Hamilton just two hundredths slower than the Mexican, but marginally faster than Spanish Grand Prix winner Pastor Maldonado in the Williams FW34.

In an effort to show he deserves to maintain his drive with the team, Felipe Massa 'kissed the barriers' with the rear of his Ferrari and recorded the sixth best lap time on the timesheets.
