F1 : 2012 Monaco - Red Bull - Monte Carlo Formula 1 Thursday report E-mail
Thursday, 24 May 2012 10:15
Formula One report - Red Bull Racing team comments following the practice sessions at the Monte Carlo circuit.

SEBASTIAN VETTEL
FP1 Position: 9, Best Time: 1'17.222, Laps: 14
FP2 Position: 10, Best Time: 1'17.303, Laps: 21
“We didn’t learn too much from today due to the conditions. It wasn’t ideal as this morning we had a red flag and then it rained this afternoon; as a result it’s hard to say where we are. We didn’t have a lot of grip due to the rain, it was very slippery on track and there were a lot of cars out at the same time, but it was the same for everyone. The weather can change quickly here and now you see there is sunshine again already.”

MARK WEBBER
FP1 Position: 13, Best Time: 1'18.106, Laps: 14
FP2 Position: 7, Best Time 1'17.148, Laps: 23
“It was not easy for us, as for all the teams today, and we’ve got some work to do in the next 24 hours. There are clearly some very quick cars and we need to see where we can improve. Obviously it was limited running for everyone, so we didn’t do as much as we would have liked; but that’s how it went today and Monaco’s like that, it throws up some challenges. The track’s quite inconsistent in terms of grip, but we did learn some things today.”

People talk
A Formula One team is all about the people, but away from the racing what makes our team members tick? With one eye on our ‘Monaco 70’ event this evening, we asked some team members for their best memories of racing in Monte Carlo. Here’s what they told us…

Adrian Newey
“My best memory of the Monaco GP was 1998, my first year with McLaren. We had problems in practice with the rear track rods, both Mika and David bent them by brushing the barrier. So, on Saturday night we flew the track rods back to the UK to get them reinforced. In the race David went off, which left with Mika with a big lead. Then, about five laps from the end he hit the barrier at Rascasse and we thought ‘it’s over’. But he kept going and won. Afterwards, we looked at the rear track rod and it was slightly bent, but had survived, so without that mod we would have lost the race. It was one of those moments where we thought, ‘yep, we did the right thing that time,’ and we got the result.”

Christian Horner
“My favourite Monaco memory was 2004 when Vitantonio Liuzzi won the Formula 3000 support race here. It was the first time we had won in Monaco, having the year before given away the victory just before the line when Bjorn Wirdheim slowed down too soon before the chequered flag, so to win in 2004 was a really great moment.”

Mark Webber
“My best Formula One moment here so far is obviously my victory in 2010. I remember watching grands prix very early in Australia on TV when I was young. Watching the top drivers on this track provided great memories, but to have been able to win this race from pole position with a top field behind me, Robert Kubica drove superbly that weekend and Seb was driving well, was just a massive highlight. It was also the first victory for Red Bull Racing here, extremely unique.”

Sebastian Vettel
"My best memory, although not Formula One, was the Monaco Kart Cup we had here in 2001. That year it was particularly close, but I was able to win the race, which was fantastic. Part of it was on the Formula One track. I was 14-years-old, so it was a great memory and something I will never forget.”
