In a fast paced Price Chopper 400, the third race in the Chase dominated by the title contenders on Sunday, the 1.5 mile Kansas Speedway played a major role in the Sprint Cup championship, which got a whole lot tighter after Ford driver Greg Biffle entered the race 140 points behind Denny Hamlin, got back in the title hunt with his second win of the year, his second win at Kansas and the 16th victory of his career, now heads for California eighth in the standings trailing the lead by 85 points and Jimmie Johnson, seeking his fifth consecutive Cup title, resumed his normal spot atop the NASCAR leader-board with seven races remaining to determine the championship.

In the third race in the Chase at the Kansas Speedway, Kasey Kahne ran a good lap on Friday, being the 11th driver to make a qualifying attempt at the 1.5 mile speedway he doubted it would be good enough to hold up for the pole, the #9 Ford racer covered the distance in 30.920 seconds at a speed of 174.644 mph to claim the top starting spot for Sunday's Price Chopper 400, his third pole of the season and the 19th of his career to edge Richard Petty Motorsports team-mate Paul Menard leaving the duo to lead a parade of non-Chase drivers into the top 10 on the grid, with Jeff Gordon third fastest at 174.430 mph, Greg Biffle fifth at 174.255 mph, Matt Kenseth eighth at 173.902 mph and Kurt Busch ninth at 173.874 mph, the only Chase drivers in the top 10.

With the spotlight on favourites Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer headed into the Chase opener at New Hampshire Motor Speedway with nothing to lose and went on to dominate on Sunday until a series of cautions found him trailing Tony Stewart over the closing laps of the Sylvania 300, while both drivers were conserving fuel to the finish, Bowyer positioned himself to make his move when Stewart's tank ran dry a lap from the chequered flag handing the victory to the #33 Cheerios / Hamburger Helper Chevrolet driver ending an eighty eight race losing streak for the racer from Emporia, Kansas elevating him from twelfth in the standings to second and sending the Richard Childress Racing driver into Round 2 of the Chase with good prospects in the championship.
